Memorial Windows

Northern Art Glass creates new stained glass memorials in traditional and contemporary styles. The studio has produced literally hundreds of individual memorial windows, for all denominations of churches, since 1978. We have designed and installed complete stained glass window interiors for a number of area churches. Our site crew is fully certified and can provide professional installation into any space.

We offer a wide range of costs and design concepts. Styles of memorial windows can vary from simple patterns featuring symbols of faith to beautifully rendered biblical scenes in glowing detail. We pride ourselves on our mastery of traditional glass techniques. Designs are hand painted on colored glass and kiln-fired for permanence. The windows are fabricated with lead cames, a method over 1200 years old. Each of our memorial windows is designed to be a lasting tribute.

Restoration and Conservation

The team at Northern Art Glass are recognized professionals in the field of heritage stained glass restoration. Our firm has completed the major large scale restoration projects in eastern Ontarion and western Quebec since 1978. Our work at the historic Notre Dame Basilica was featured in Heritage Canada Magazine, March 1987 issue. This project was a complete refurbishing of the original glasswork dating from 1879 at this historic Ottawa landmark. Northern Art Glass has carried out restoration projects in more than 100 churches and heritage buildings throughout the Ottawa Valley.

We also provide consulting services and conservation reports for stained glass. The intent of a conservation study is to provide an accurate assessment of the windows and to generate a cohesive approach to stabilizing and preserving the stained glass for future generations. Individual windows are identified on a Key Plan, photographed, and carefully documented. Detains include: the style, theme, dimensions, access to, glass and lead types, structural framing components and most importantly, the condition of the glasswork. Windows are prioritized according to the urgency of their condition. These evaluations are a valuable tool for insurance purposes and property maintenance budgeting and, as well, provide an important archival record. These reports are often carried our in concert with an architect and other professional consultants as part of a comprehensive building audit.

These comprehensive specifications for the materials and methodology of stained glass restoration have been employed by architects on a number of heritage projects and can be tailored to form tender documents for any stained or leaded glass contract.
