Northern Art Glass

Restoration

St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church , Ottawa

These historic windows at St. John the Evangelist are located above the main
altar. They were fabricated and installed by J. & R. Lamb Studios, New York City
in 1901. The windows are double plated with two complete layers of glass and
lead with three layers in some areas. These windows were restored by Northern
Art Glass and reinstalled in 2009.

Examples of the double layering. By combining multiple layers in one window
a very painterly effect of shadow and colour was achieved. Note the number of
pieces in the 'sky' on the back layer (right) compared to the large panes of blue
glass on the front layer (left). See above (centre) for the final result.

All faces and hands were plated. Detail is painted in black and browns on the
front pane and augumented with coloured enamels painted on the rear layer.
See below for the effect. Note the blush tone on his cheek.

The restoration of these windows required the skills of our best craftspeople.
The two layers had to be leaded at the same time. Some areas on each level
are single glazed and then are joined together with the 1/2" high heart lead
cames (3/16", 1/4" interior widths and 1/2"H on the perimeter).
New heritage cames were specifically milled by DHD to match the originals. The
support system was enhanced with stronger T-bars and the insertion of flat
re-bars into the leaf of the exterior came all around. New, larger glazing stops
were also added to provide maximum support.
